Dana Lawton Dances was founded in 2007 with a simple but uncommon premise: that a dance company should look like the world it performs for. DLD brings together a multigenerational group of dancers spanning their mid-20s to mid-60s, creating an ensemble where generations don't just share a stage, but rather inform and challenge each other, producing work of unusual depth and vitality.

What makes DLD distinctive isn't just who is on stage, but what that mix makes possible. Dana Lawton's choreography draws on the full range of what her dancers bring. The dancers’ experience, physicality, and histories all become ingredients that are shaped it into work that is formally rigorous, emotionally alive, and genuinely invested in the human beings in the room.

Since its founding, DLD has built a repertory of over 35 works, including five evening-length productions, performing across the Bay Area and touring to stages in New York, Santa Barbara, Belfast, France, and Bangkok. The company is rooted in the East Bay and has called Shawl-Anderson Dance Center home for much of its history.
